A Hearst Foundations grant will fund scholarships for Carleton SLAI students.

Carleton has received a two-year, $100,000 grant from The Hearst Foundations to support scholarships to the college’s Summer Liberal Arts Institute. The Foundations generously added $50,000 to the award.

According to SLAI director Margi Youmans, Hearst funds will provide as many as 33 full scholarships for under-resourced high school students to attend one of SLAI’s five three-week summer residential programs in summer 2024 and 2025. SLAI’s immersive, authentic learning experiences introduce students to the excitement, creativity, and interdisciplinary aspects of the liberal arts. SLAI attendees are exposed to rigorous content and research methods that will prepare them for undergraduate careers at the nation’s top institutions.

The Hearst Foundations are national philanthropic resources for organizations working in the fields of culture, education, health and social services. They identify and fund outstanding nonprofits to ensure that people of all backgrounds in the United States have the opportunity to build healthy, productive and satisfying lives. Carleton previously received a Hearst grant in 2016 to support summer program students. A match from an anonymous donor will double the $75,000 of the Hearst grant that Carleton will use in 2024.
