A lot of people are a little surprised when they find out that I have so many titles under my name, many hadn’t even realized that triple-小ing was an option, some (if not most) of them probably think that I either have tirelessly worked towards my degrees from the moment I stepped on campus and have no academic life outside these or that I will eventually be unable to complete all of them. 事实并非如此! Allow me to demystify the process and experience of triple-小ing, 希望能激励你也试一试!

决定三小调

A common and fair assumption people make when I introduce myself as a triple-小 is that I have been planning to do so since I was a first-year student. 事实是, while I have been thinking about some of my 未成年人 for quite a while, I hadn’t seriously considered pursuing them until rather late in the game.

我选的第一个辅修是 教育研究. I have always known that I am interested in pedagogy, so this was kind of a no-brainer for me. 跨文化研究 came along when I was taking I’m a Stranger Here Myself during my 大一冬季学期. It was around that time that I learned how valuable it was for me to reflect on my own cross-cultural experiences academically. 看一下需求, I realized that completing the 小 would be super easy, given how much overlap it had with my other academic interests, 所以我决定追求它.

The 拉丁美洲研究 小 didn’t join the conversation until much later (a year later, 准确地说). 大二的时候, 我上了两门拉丁美洲课程, one about Hispanic literature and one about Hispanic immigration to the U.S., I grew fond of the intellectual debates that were centered around my corner of the world. Devoted to the academic exploration of Latin America, I decided to declare the 小 shortly after.

Something important to me is having the space in my schedule to explore other intellectual interests, 包括学习如何弹钢琴!

I get often asked why I didn’t simply pursue a double major. There are several reasons my path led me to a single major, the most important one being that 跨文化研究 and 教育研究 are only offered as 未成年人 at 菲律宾十大彩票平台. 拉丁美洲研究 has the option of declaring it as a major, but in doing so I would have had to work harder to fulfill the requirements for all four academic fields, which would have meant less time to spend trying out other subjects. 也就是说,这会阻止我 出国 a second time, which I will do this coming spring term! 

Pursuing the 拉丁美洲研究 major would have also meant that I would have had to take more literature courses in Spanish and, 作为大四学生, 写两个 比较 (专业毕业论文). 虽然 我爱我的语言 以及它的文献, 我不是特别喜欢文学分析, so taking more classes in that area made little sense to me. 至于双重合成, while this is a fairly common and doable practice at 菲律宾十大彩票平台, 我感觉不太合适. Another common reaction to my triple-小ing is the question of why 小ing at all. Our Liberal Arts curriculum allows us to take courses in any department of our choice, regardless of whether we are officially involved through a major or a 小. So, couldn’t I have just taken the classes without declaring the 未成年人? 简短的回答是:绝对的! 

The longer answer is that knowing that I wanted to take the courses, why not declare the 小? 确定, 在我的成绩单上看起来不错, 更重要的是, I believe in the value of being part of an intellectual community and establishing relationships with my professors, both things which are made easier by declaring the 小.

I have kept this spreadsheet since my first year, it has helped me immensely to visualize my progress and plan out the courses I need to take in the future.

实践中的三辅修

There is no secret to completing a triple 小 in time for graduation. I feel lucky to have academic interests that intersect each other as much as my majors and my 未成年人 do. Their overlap has certainly made it easier for me to structure my courses, 拟定我的条件, 满足要求. Maintaining good and constant communication with my 顾问 教授当然也有帮助. 最终, I think if you are truly in love with your 未成年人 and feel committed to them, 没有什么能阻止你得到它们!
